A New Approach to Decision Making

Every day you are involved in group decision-making, whether you’re in a staff meeting at work or at the dinner table with your family. It can sometimes be a tedious process and can produce outcomes short of satisfying. Now there is a solution: a unique approach to decision-making called Dynamic Governance.

What is Dynamic Governance?
This is an approach to making decisions in groups that is totally different from what we are used to. It combines a facilitation and decision-making method with a different way of using the hierarchy in the organization. Successfully used for more than 40 years by businesses and groups in the Netherlands and around the world, it enables everyone in an organization—from the mail clerk to the CEO—to have a voice and influence policy. You’ll spend less time in meetings and arrive at better decisions. Doesn't that sound like a paradox!

Dynamic Governance works in a wide range of settings, including families, volunteer groups, community organizations, non-profits, governmental agencies, small businesses, schools, and large corporations. This groundbreaking process can
  • kindle creativity and innovation
  • reduce tensions about power
  • decrease the number of meetings while increasing their productivity
  • streamline decision-making while empowering all members
  • increase individual engagement, productivity, and commitment.
Think about it: Rather than yet another technique to teach managers to relate better to employees or that requires expensive overhauls of reporting mechanisms, Dynamic Governance rewires the decision-making process to mine the intelligence and creativity that already exist in the organization. It can fundamentally transform an organization without interrupting day-to-day operations.

Some unusual features of Dynamic Governance:
  • Communication goes up and down. In a hierarchical organization, information generally flows from top to bottom much more readily than the other direction. The result is that the people carrying out the decisions have key information that the decision-makers need and may be missing, information that can change over time. Using Dynamic Governance, information flows in both directions, so that feedback occurs. This change is structural, rather than being left to chance. The result is more accurate, creative decisions and stronger employee engagement.

  • Ongoing feedback connects goals, policy decisions, and outcomes. Decisions are always linked to the aim of the group. Part of the process is to set a trial time period and a measurement to determine if a particular decision is actually accomplishing that aim, so there is a feedback cycle.

  • Dynamic Governance is consistent with best practices for quality control. Like recognized quality control methods, Dynamic Governance encourages clear work-flow processes and ongoing thorough documentation of policies so that everyone knows as specifically and reliably as possible what to do. In various countries, companies using Dynamic Governance that have obtained ISO 9000 certification found they were able to do so with surprising ease because they were already working according to quality principles.
